Exploring the History and Beauty of Lough Swilly.
As the warm summer sun beat down upon the small village of Newtowncunningham, a group of friends and cousins set out on an adventure to explore the back shore of the town. They had heard stories of hidden coves and secret trails, and they were determined to discover them for themselves.
The group set off, their footsteps crunching against the gravel road as they made their way towards the coastline. The air was alive with the sounds of nature—birds singing, waves crashing against the shore, and the rustle of leaves in the gentle breeze.
As Caroline and her cousins set out towards the back shore of Newtowncunningham, Caroline felt a comforting presence beside her. It was Aishling, her spirit friend who had always been there for her, guiding her on her spiritual journey.
Though Aishling could not be seen or heard by Caroline’s cousins and friends, she remained a constant presence, a source of comfort and guidance for Caroline. As they walked along the rugged coastline, Caroline shared stories of the town’s history and her knowledge of the Lough Swilly, while Aishling shared her insights on the spiritual significance of the area.
As they walked, Caroline shared stories of the town’s history, pointing out old buildings and landmarks, each with its own unique tale to tell. Aishling added her knowledge of the Lough Swilly and its importance to the town, sharing tales of fierce battles fought on the water, ships sailing in and out of the harbour, and even legends of mermaids said to inhabit the depths.
One of the most famous battles that took place in the Lough Swilly was the Battle of Lough Swilly in 1690. It was fought between the French and English fleets during the Williamite War in Ireland.
The French had landed troops in Ireland to support the Jacobites, who were fighting against the Protestant William of Orange. The English fleet, led by Admiral Arthur Herbert, was tasked with preventing the French from landing more troops.
On June 4, 1690, the French fleet attempted to sail up the Lough Swilly to deliver reinforcements to the Jacobites. However, they were met by the English fleet, and a fierce battle ensued.
The English fleet was outnumbered, but they managed to use their superior firepower to disable several French ships. The French attempted to land their troops despite the damage, but they were met by a hail of English gunfire.
In the end, the French were forced to retreat, and the English fleet emerged victorious. The battle was a major turning point in the Williamite War and helped secure William of Orange’s place on the throne of England.
As they approached the back shore, the group was struck by the rugged beauty of the coastline. The cliffs towered above them, their craggy edges jutting out into the sea, while the water sparkled in the sunlight.

Throughout the journey, Aishling remained by Caroline’s side, encouraging her, guiding her, and sharing her wisdom. Though she was invisible to the others, Caroline felt her presence deeply, and it gave her the strength and courage to continue on the adventure.
Caroline led the way, scrambling up steep inclines and leaping from rock to rock, her cousins following closely behind. Aishling walked alongside her, her presence a calming influence amidst the excitement of the adventure.
As they journeyed further along the coast, Caroline and Aishling shared stories of the ancient Celts who had once roamed the area, their customs and beliefs, and legends of their gods and goddesses. They marvelled at the sense of history and magic that seemed to permeate the landscape.
One ancient Celtic story associated with the Lough Swilly is the tale of Balor of the Evil Eye. According to legend, Balor was a powerful giant and king of the Fomorians, a race of supernatural beings who were believed to have once ruled over Ireland.
Balor was said to possess a magical eye that could kill with a single glance. It was so powerful that he had to keep it covered at all times, for fear of accidentally causing harm to those around him.
The story goes that Balor’s grandson, Lugh, led a rebellion against him, eventually defeating him in battle. During the final confrontation, Lugh managed to pierce Balor’s eye with a magical spear, causing the giant to fall to the ground and die.
The site of Balor’s final battle is said to be located near the Lough Swilly, and it is believed that his spirit still haunts the area to this day. Some locals claim to have seen his ghostly figure wandering the shores of the lough, searching for his lost eye, and seeking revenge against those who defeated him.
The story of Balor of the Evil Eye is just one example of the rich mythology and folklore associated with the Lough Swilly and the ancient Celts who once called the area home.
Throughout the journey, Aishling remained by Caroline’s side, encouraging her, guiding her, and sharing her wisdom. Though she was invisible to the others, Caroline felt her presence deeply, and it gave her the strength and courage to continue on the adventure.
As they reached a hidden cove, Caroline’s cousins gasped in amazement. The water was crystal clear, and the sand gleamed like gold in the sunlight. Caroline and Aishling encouraged them to dive in, and soon they were splashing and playing in the cool waters, revelling in the freedom and joy of the moment.
As they all sat in the cave Caroline started to tell the story of a hidden cave that is said to be located somewhere beneath the waters of the lough. According to legend, the cave is filled with treasures beyond imagination and guarded by mystical beings.
The story goes that many years ago, a wealthy chieftain who lived near the lough had a dream in which he was visited by a beautiful fairy who led him to the hidden cave. In the dream, she showed him the riches that lay within and told him that they were his for the taking.
The chieftain was sceptical at first, but the fairy promised him that the treasures would bring him great wealth and power. So, he set out to find the cave, eventually discovering its entrance beneath the waters of the lough.
Inside, he found gold and silver coins, precious jewels, and other valuable artifacts. But as he began to collect the treasure, he was suddenly attacked by a group of mystical beings who had been guarding the cave. The chieftain managed to escape with some of the treasure, but he was never able to find the cave again.
The story of the hidden cave in the Lough Swilly has been passed down through the generations and is still told to this day. Some people believe that the cave is still hidden somewhere beneath the waters of the lough, waiting to be discovered by someone brave enough to seek it out.
As they sat on the rocks near the shores of Lough Swilly, Caroline and her cousins enjoyed the packed lunches they had brought with them. They savoured the taste of the freshly made sandwiches, sipping on the sweet juice from their drinks as they listened to Caroline’s stories of the town’s history and folklore.
Caroline’s cousins were fascinated by the tales she shared, their eyes widening with wonder at the rich heritage of the area. They could feel the ancient spirits of the land swirling around them, adding an eerie but comforting presence to the moment.
Caroline spoke of the many battles that had been fought on the lough over the years, of the fierce warriors who had fought for their honour and their people. She talked of the fishermen who had braved the choppy waters to catch the plentiful fish that once swam in the lough.
As they sat and listened, Caroline’s cousins felt a deep sense of connection to the land and its history. They could sense the importance of their ancestors’ struggles and how it had shaped the world around them.
As they finished their lunch, Caroline’s cousins knew that this adventure was one that they would never forget. They had been transported back in time through Caroline’s words, to a world where battles were fought, and legends were born. And in that moment, they felt more connected to their roots than ever before.
After finishing their packed lunches, Caroline and her cousins decided to explore the small beach they had found. The beach was hidden away from the main road, and the only way to reach it was by taking a small footpath through the woods.
As they walked towards the beach, the sound of waves crashing against the shore grew louder, and the smell of salty sea air filled their nostrils. When they finally emerged from the trees, they saw a small, secluded beach with crystal-clear water, and they couldn’t resist the temptation to take a dip.
Caroline and her cousins eagerly splashed in the water, feeling the cool waves tickle their toes and the soft seaweed brush against their skin. They laughed and shouted as they tried to skip stones across the water, competing to see who could get the most bounces.
After a while, they tired of swimming and sat on the rocks to dry off in the sun. The warmth of the sun felt good on their skin, and they closed their eyes, listening to the sound of the waves and the seagulls overhead.
As the sun began to set on their day of adventure, Caroline and her cousins knew it was time to start packing up their things and head back home. The sky was ablaze with colours of orange and pink, and the air was beginning to chill as the day turned to night.
They gathered their belongings, taking one last look at the beautiful beach and the serene Lough Swilly before setting off on their journey back home. As they walked, Caroline and her cousins continued to talk and laugh, reminiscing about the stories and adventures of the day.
Despite the tiredness in their legs, they walked on, enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the evening. But as they neared home, they realized that it was getting late, and their stomachs were beginning to grumble.
It was already 8 pm, and they knew that they needed to find some food soon. They were all going to Caroline’s aunt Elizabeths house for dinner, and they wondered would she scold them coming back so late.
As they arrived at Elizabeth’s house, they could smell the delicious aroma of a hearty meal cooking away on the range. They sat down at a table, feeling the warmth of the cosy room, and started to tell their adventures while having their dinner.
As they ate, they talked about the adventures of the day, laughing and smiling as they relived their experiences. They knew that they had made memories that would last a lifetime, and they were grateful for the time they had spent together.
As they finished their meal, they said their goodbyes as Caroline had to leave and go back to her home, feeling happy and content after a day well spent. Caroline and her cousins knew that they would always cherish this adventure, and they couldn’t wait for the next one.
